RAPID FEEDBACK
REPEATABLE SYSTEMS

Eric has supporting network services on BSD and Linux systems for more than 20 years. He never set out to be a database administrator, but he considers almost any day programming in PostgreSQL to be a good day.

There were several waypoints that shaped his approach systems design, the most notable of which is the study of test-driven development. From this, several convictions were formed:

  1. Automated testing is the discipline of software engineering
  2. Progress corresponds to the time it takes to receive feedback on a change

This mindset motivated the design of Unix tools that allow changes to source code and systems configuration to be applied-and-executed with minimal delay.

Since 1999 Eric has kept a journal of computing tools and techniques at http://eradman.com/.
